Research & Planning(Ideas&Drafts of the double page spread)

This is a page from Rio Ferdinads 5 magazine. I like the look of this page, and I'm thinking I might take some ideas from this such as the layout because i think it looks quiet good and effective AND different considering the fact that most of the times you seen the story in neat columns!
Ideas of the story/stories that should be included!
- Influences from other artists, what they do, their lifestyle, what they get up to etc to create a persona for the person in the picture!

Research & Planning(Ideas&Drafts of the contents page)

I will use a 14 yr old as a model on the contents page because i want this magazine to reach out to the youth as well people of other ages. Many of these young people get exposed to useless junk music such as 50 cent etc. And i have to say hip hop was a genre that was formed were people expressed themselves. Spoke against the injustice and oppression that they faced in 1950/60's America, and it annoys me that today hip hop no longer has its meaning. Hip hop as some people say has died but i disagree, its live and still kicking but the reality is it gone underground! The media today focus all their attention on the young people who commit crime, smoke, drink. They fail to understand that there are a lot of young people out there that are doing good, a few months back when the floods hit Pakistan i decided to organize a street collection- and i got the young people involved, the turnout was great. Those are the young people that are media associate violence with. Can't help but feel a little worried. The fact is many of these young children are under represented. I volunteered at the a youth center and i got talking to these young people and i have to say i was quite shocked as well as VERY impressed at their level of understanding and maturity. When a 13 year old lad was talking about his extended family suffering from injustice in Pakistan, it really did hit me, i could not believe that he understood the situation. One thing he said that hit me was "we don't have to share the same blood, we don't even have to be tied to each other by kinship but we are all brothers&sisters in humanity, the day we all learn to live together that day we will all be free because even if one person suffers from injustice in this world we are not free". That is pretty profound for a 13 year old. So back to the point were i said the youth are under represented, the media needs to focus more on these young people! they do have something to give back to society and they are definitely needed to build a better future for us all, not just us British people but a future for us all! so yes that is the inspiration behind the picture on the contents page! and that is the reason why i have the 'Knowledge' image as the background, at times we assume because they are young they are quite 'dumb' or even uneducated.

Research & Planning(Ideas&Drafts of the magazine cover)

Research & Planning(Auditioning models 4)

Plan for the week- starting Monday 22nd 2010!

What to do this week? well i need to choose the final model(s) for the magazine, take the final shots! i should be doing that today hopefully. I need to write up the prop and shot list. Need to get started on more drafts, so i need to start looking at certain layouts etc!

By the end of this week i need to write up a first draft of the story that will be on the double page spread.. at this moment I'm thinking something related to Norman Finklestein's work as i will be attending his speech today!! :D :D excited, AND i need drafts for the contents page as well as the magazine cover

Research & Planning(Auditioning models1)

My little brother, age 10 years old!- to be a political activist that uses hip-hop music to convey the message of peace and justice you need to look mature and i'm pretty sure a 10 year old kid won't know the system etcccc!

Research&planning(costume shot and prop list)

Costume

- At this stage I'm thinking the final model that i will pick is going to be my brother, as the image that is taken needs to portray a sense of maturity as explained in another post. So the costumes that i will choose will be his clothes:- Worker boots, hoodies, t-shirts, jeans and his shirts!! also I'm thinking I'm going to take a shot which portrays the lives of these artists. Many have ordinary jobs, most are university graduates they aren't some underground drug addicts that make music so they can attack the system. So I'm going to ask him to wear his smart clothes!!

Shot list
- close up, on magazine cover
-Long shot- contents page picture

Research&planning: Final Masthead design

This is the final masthead design that i have decided upon. I really like this design. Its bold, and suitable for the genre that i am working on. The white marks on the writing makes it look quite effective. So i will be using this design hopefully.

Research & Planning: Test shots for My music Magazine

This is an photo that i took a while ago, its a image drawn by Muhammed Ali, in Birmingham. I find this quite facinating as it captures most things that these hip hop artists stand for. Knowledge is the way forward to create understanding and kill ignorance amongst mankind. I will definately use this image!!

Research & Planning: Double spread analysis

Type of story in the magazine?
- Her life and experiences
- What she has been upto
- Her life in the industry

What type of media language is used?
-Quite informal.. 'Since she was last in etc'
-Rhetorical questions!
-Interactivity
-factual

What is the relationship with the copy(text) and the image(pictures used)?
-image on the left is her role as a singer, therefore links with her career.
-Image on the right links with her personal life with family etc.

What colours are used? and is there a relationship between the colours and the images/text?
-Black,orange, white
-Colour theme is linked to her costume/clothes in the image on the image in the left..likewise the image links with colour scheme on the picture in the right.

What is the structure of the double page spread?
- Her picture as the background, quite faded
- Pictures are quite faded so the text can be seen
-
How does it try and reach its target audience?
-The colour scheme is quite vibrant, attracts the audience
-bright
-associated with R&B

Research & Planning: Analysis Of contents page

Also reflects the group that they are targeting.  It follows all the typical conventions when making a magazine. It is similar to a previous issue of NME; however the main image isn't as large and the column which lists what is in the magazine doesn't appear as forced to fit in. The focus image is of a band.

All the font on the page are similar. The colours are different. The basic trend of the text is: page numbers in bold red at the start of the sentence and the article title in black. I

- includes the date, magazine website URL and the blurb after the Q reviews section. Additionally there is a quote in a box underneath the main article teasing the viewer into reading story.

- articles are broken up into three different sections: features.

Research & Planning: Draft of the music magazine

Research&planning.

This is a draft of the music magazine, i was just playing about with photoshop, and with the masthead and the layout.. added a few pictures from the internet to see what it would look like..the masthead even though i really like it is not bold, does not stand out and really isn't suitable for the magazine. I need something more effective.

Research & Planning: Masthead ideas

Research&planning
First masthead is quite neat and tidy. Arabic influenced design. I actually quite like this design however i think it does not suit the genre that I will be designing, as i have already done a draft. It looks quite plain and simple and it most certainly does not look effective.

The second masthead looks more suited to the genre, however it still looks slightly boring and quite plain. So like the first design i won't be using it.

The third design is not suitable for the genre of my magazine. It looks as if it is more suitable for a rock/punk magazine.

Research & Planning: Masthead ideas

Research&planning
Masthead ideas and design, i played around with the designs on photoshop, all of them seem pretty effective.. i decided to name the magazine 'Revolution' as revolution is a change in power Its use to refer to political changes. And one of my main aim in creating the magazine is too get the message of peace and solidarity across to the audience. 'Revolution' also refers to the original form of hip hop music, hip hop legends such as Tupac use to create music so they could put their message across.. Revoloution was also one of the most popular names to be chosen in the research that i had done.

Research & Planning:(Target Audience)

Research&planning

I chose Dr Dahlia Wasfi as a typical person that may take an interest in reading the magazine as she is a person that is heavily active in taking an interest in global issues such as war in Iraq, Afghanistan. She takes part in various talks.

The target audience for my magazine would be people aged 16-35, or perhaps older. It is targeted at both genders. As underground hip-hop artists would aim to educate people in society as a whole, the occupation of the person who reads the magazine isn't really an issue as it can range from a student who has a tight budget to a doctor, so wealth isn't a factor that needs to be taken into consideration. The people who would typically read this magazine would be people who take an interest in global issues, people that are anti-war, people who aim to contribute towards global peace. People that want to help make a change in the world. People who have protested against war in Iraq, Afghanistan. People who have protested against the injustice that is taking place in Palestine. There isn't a particular social class that i am aiming my magazine at as its quite difficult to categorize people into classes when as mentioned they range from students to doctors. To help make a difference in the world you don't have to be from a specific class. Underground hip-hop artists don't usually have 'gigs'- for example Lowkey will perform for an event which concern global issues, educating the public as a whole is the main aim.

The research conducted from my questionnaires shows that people don't really know the real meaning of 'hip-hop' as today's mainstream society has combined other genres with hip-hop. Most associated hip-hop with RnB music. So the research carried out really didn't help as much as i thought.
